Dentistry and Heart Disease
Recent studies show considerable links between heart disease and oral health.
In particular, gum disease and tooth loss may be good predictors of future heart disease.
The Theory is:
Mouth bacteria - which cause gum disease - enter the bloodstream through the inflamed gum tissues. The resulting effects eventually end up in the same plaque associated with heart disease.
The Best Remedy?
- Proper oral hygiene (brush twice daily, floss daily)
- No smoking
- Weight control
- Balanced diet

Although we don't often think that poor oral health may lead to such dire consequences, the recent research makes a convincing link. Take heed, practice good oral hygiene, start at an early age, and encourage others to do the same! |
